What is a Heart of a Bird Compared to the Heart of a Man?

copper, nail polish, 450 x 110mm, 2024.

'The piece was inspired by one of the most well-known Oscar Wilde’s narrative, The Nightingale and The Rose, specifically the Nightingale’s selfless sacrifice to create the red rose. In this piece, I wanted to specify the important elements of sacrifice, love, and purity by transforming the narrative into one wearable piece. The accessibility / price of copper and nail polish allows me to achieve a distinctive appearance of the necklace, since there was no budget limitation. Small hints of burgundy red, are incorporated into the necklace to symbolize the Nightingale’s blood. In Wilde’s story, the Nightingale sacrifices herself by pressing her breast against the thorn of the white rose tree, allowing her blood to transform the white rose into a full red colour. On the other hand, thee red and black stripey details in the piece, metaphorically means, how affection can be blinding and harmful. I applied the alphabet stamps on to the main pendant, which I quoted from the narrative, “What is a heart of a bird, compared to a heart of a man?”. The text acts as a reminder of her willingness, unconditional love, and emotional significance of the Nightingale’s sacrifice.

Fairy Canapés is a small sized brass sculpture, exploring the whimsical world of fairy tales through the familiar form of canapés. I was inspired by my childhood memories of fairy tales and here specifically, my imagination of how fairies might eat. Based on my perspective “How would a fairy eat?”, the piece invites the viewer to see a dining perspective of an imaginary magical creature. The playful sculpture combines flower-shaped wooden canapés with square brass “crackers”. The flower shape reflects my idea as a child who would associates flower with fairy, and the geometric brass pieces create a playful contrast. The whimsiness and unconventional shape of the sculpture are associated with my creative mind when I was a child” . By using brass, wooden, and pvc coated wire, I had a freedom to complete the playful concept, as the work focuses on imagination and creativity, rather than luxury or material value.’
