Have You Seen the Price of Silver? showcases works by current RMIT Jewellery and Material Practice undergraduate students. The works demonstrate a broad range of material explorations, responding to the increasing challenge of accessing precious metals as primary materials amid dramatic economic turbulence, as attitudes shift from valuing sentimentality to material worth.
Jewellery education in Australia has undergone significant transformation since its beginnings at RMIT as a design pathway. The recent name change from Gold and Silversmithing (G&S) to Jewellery and Material Practice reflects the long-standing and current methodologies of the G&S studio area in the School of Art.
While art jewellery has long explored alternative, found and recycled materials, this exhibition offers a timely insight into the lived experience of current students as they explore, experiment and express. Although students are already asked to reimagine, deconstruct, and analyse chosen materials, it is now more pertinent than ever for them to find alternatives to precious metals.
Have You Seen the Price of Silver? asks a new generation of students to consider: what are the possibilities of jewellery and objects without precious metals?
