‘Throughout my practice, I have created a limited number of silver jewellery pieces. This limitation has greatly shaped my jewellery practice. I have shifted from traditional jewellery making to a contemporary, material-based practice. My work explores conceptual elements such as memory, texture, and colour without using silver. However, silver can’t be avoided for some technical processes in my jewellery practice. Nonetheless, my work experiments with different material properties and techniques, such as enamelling, chain making, and material exploration. Limited access to silver has broadened my material jewellery practice, allowing me to focus more on non-precious metal fabrication and creation. The high cost of silver has not only broadened my material use but also how I apply different materials to wearable jewellery forms. Now my work has started to explore how different materials can hold memory through different jewellery forms.’

Elizabeth Nieuwoudt is a metal artist, jeweller, object maker and painter. She is focused on experimentation with colour, texture and memories. Recently, the colour pink and circular motifs have been recurring features in her work, displaying the exploration of how colours and experiences can be represented through jewellery. Her work often explores her experimentation and explorations of themes surrounding colour, texture, memories and experiences.
