Kitty Calvert
The Biscuit Whistler
Recycled vintage and antique treasures (mixed metals and porcelain)
80cm tall
$650

Recycling preloved treasure into a new form, this sculpture speaks to our current state of mind, brought about by living in the confinement of stage 4 lock-down. The constraints of only being able to leave your home for food, or exercise.

Living in an inner suburb of Melbourne, the original buildings from the Swallow and Ariel biscuit company feature on our daily exercise route, reminding us of simpler times.  The tin used in this piece would have passed though that very site on its way to the original owner.

Lockdown has meant more time at home and away from the everyday pursuits of a “normal” life.   The face on the sculpture appears to be whistling, perhaps as a way to distract itself from worries and the heaviness, felt by so many of us in these testing times.
