Strange Views of the Garden explores the garden (space, reflection, presence) not as a fixed image, but as a living space of memory, perception, and transformation. Each work captures moments when the familiar slips into unfamiliar sensations—where thought meets intuition.

The garden became a place of refuge and a mirror of my presence. During times of physical and social isolation, observing a single blade of grass swaying in the wind reminded me that even the smallest existence holds delicate strength and meaning.

With a background in traditional East Asian painting, my sensitivity to living beings and contemplation of nature continues to be a vital source of inspiration in my practice.

The canvas is often divided: one side filled with blooming forms, the other left open in fields of blue. This dual structure is not merely a compositional choice, but reflects my sense of place—formed by living between two countries. In navigating the flatness of painting, I seek to create a space where contrasting elements coexist. The horizon, rather than marking a boundary, serves as a line of recognition—a quiet point where material and formal differences are acknowledged without conflict.

The materiality and form of painting may sometimes shape the direction of the work, but I receive these forces not as constraints, but as part of the process. Moments of emptiness(여백)—offer a deeper kind of freedom, expanding the boundaries of perception. Through my methodology, I allow textures born from unplanned speed, flowing pigment, and intuitive gestures to remain—accepting the process as a dialogue, not a problem to solve.

This exhibition is about listening to the subtle echoes of life. Just as every brushstroke holds its own reason, being as you are—existing in your own form and colour—is already a quiet and complete beauty.
