FLAT CITY is Chu’s twentieth solo presentation. He observes Melbourne from the view of a pedestrian and driver. These are scenes of everyday life: a supermarket embrace, a football crowd surging in rain, a child across lawn, a cloud, a lunch, a tram.

Traversing twenty of Melbourne’s suburbs, these forty paintings depict infrastructure, business and the movement of human life. Their surfaces are vivid and rugged like the subjects. They advance the city as ontologically flat: a sports car, a steeple, a restaurant and graffiti are presented as equal. Through this aesthetic egalitarianism, Chu gives the overlooked the same attention as the iconic.

Continuing Chu’s focus on Melbourne, FLAT CITY extends his development of a signature iconography for his home town.
