Avenues

Nick Crawford

6 - 17 October

Please join us for the opening celebration Friday 2nd October 6-9pm

Nick Crawford is an Australian photographer, previously based in New York City. Working exclusively on film, he spent the past five years walking the city’s avenues, photographing candid, unscripted moments of everyday life. Avenues is his first exhibition.

‘Most people like to photograph their lives. I like to photograph the life around me. I want to make art from what I see—beauty, sadness, joy, humor, absurdity, irony, coincidence.

New York is an especially good place for this. I moved there in 2017 and, busy with my job, was slow to make the most of its creative energy. Afraid I never would, I dedicated my weekends to walking along the avenues with my camera, searching for moments to translate into photographs.

I started with landscapes but soon drifted toward candid snapshots of people. I was drawn to these kinds of images for their sense of narrative: Who is this person? Where are they going? Are they having a good or bad day?

The camera can record what happened, but it can’t tell me what it means. That mystery keeps me curious. I don’t need all the answers. I like imagining what lies beyond the frame, and I hope the viewer does too.’
