Limitless Play

4 - 16 November

Limitless Play was a two week takeover of No Vacancy that saw five artists (Annabel Le, Tim Sta-Ana, Felix Pear, Lae Um, Joshua So) transform the gallery into their play space, showcasing experimentation without expectations. Working across visual, physical, and auditory mediums, the artists embrace the use of play as a serious act of making. Opening night included 4 live music performances, hand-animated cartoons, sculptures, and a perpetual 3D character printer.

This body of work is an invitation to a different kind of seeing, one that embraces the perceived naivety on the surface to discover a deeper, more intuitive skill beneath, play. The work begins where technique ends.

There is a ‘secret power’ in children’s work. A line isn’t hesitant, but committed, nor the compositions or colours. It comes from a place of wonder and play, where the hand is directly connected to the heart.

To create from this place, a gentle dismantling of the adult self is almost an act of unlearning. Tapping into that uncontrived state, to find and channel play not as a replacement for skill but a different form of it.
