‘Modern Heirlooms’ translates possessions into a contemporary, minimal language that invites reflection on their emotional and symbolic weight. It explores the condition of objects kept interminably and isolates them in a dark field to be contemplated.

This series of five works continues the long term search for my personal heirlooms as I continue to discover what form they may take. A moment in time is recreated across the images, a memory of breakfast at dawn. By capturing the significant elements of this recollection it becomes tangible, able to be held not only within my mind.

Annelise Josephine Smith is an emerging artist working from her home studio in Naarm Melbourne. Through her soft oil paintings she explores objects and forms, finding their connection to person, place or memory. She was most recently recognised as a Highly Commended finalist in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize held in the South Australian Museum.
