Crumpet, 2020 is the product of a series of scientific experiments, stripping things out of everyday life and embedding them in the frame of a painting, or placing them in close-up shots to enter a moment of highlight. The depicted object is derived from the everyday world that I inhabit, derived from scrutiny of the mundaneness and quotidian. The artist finds awareness through observation and meticulous transcription, looking at the overlooked. The price of this awareness of the acquirer is isolation from the world.

Yusi Zang is a Beijing born artist living and working in Melbourne. Connecting the poetics of her inner thoughts with the realism of banal objects, Zang’s work overthrows our sense of the familiar. She reconciles the concepts of boredom and the sublime, and revolts against the commonplaces of existence.
