Karen Benton - No Vacancy

Emerging into an unfamiliar space often produces a labyrinth of emotional states and a feeling of becoming someone different. The grid as an index of both containment and connection is manipulated in the artwork, “Emerging to become something other”, to metaphorically depict the challenges experienced in encountering and adapting to the unfamiliar. The work is constructed to convey a sense of eruption and emergence from a safe and known space while also alluding to the notion of connectivity suggesting that the struggle to adapt to a new environment, is a struggle that can be shared.
