No Vacancy Workshops:
The Characters is a two-day workshop with practicing artists Que’ and Drewfunk: whose exceptional talent for drawing and painting attracts acclaim from Melbourne’s street art community. Both Que’ and Drewfunk have exhibited extensively in Melbourne’s galleries, bars, and public spaces, such as city shop fronts and council permitted laneways. In this workshop Que’ and Drewfunk will encourage young people to think critically and creatively about character design. They will be presenting images of their work as well as identifying and discussing the motivations, stylistic preferences, and cultural influences that affect their creative practice.

Day One: The students will experiment with a range of drawing techniques and painting processes. They will create character designs on paper and canvas that will demonstrate personal style and originality.

Day Two: Que’ and Drewfunk will introduce spray paint techniques. The students will learn how to apply aerosol paint to recreate their character designs onto the gallery walls of No Vacancy. This means that students will actually practice how to use their newly acquired skills in a fully supervised and safe environment. This stimulating and enjoyable workshop will benefit the students by giving them the chance to:
o Learn from and work with professional practicing artists.
o Gain confidence in using a range of new art materials including aerosol paint.
o Acquire a greater understanding of character design by developing, adapting & refining ideas into large-scale artworks.
o Learn skills that help them to move towards career paths in illustration, animation, visual arts, & graphic design.
o Build a portfolio item that can be included in applications for further study.
